Chapter Twelve
Bryce
âDid you break up with your girlfriend or something?â
My gaze fly to my stepsister, Holly. Sheâs leaning against the counter of the bar Dad had installed a few years back. âWhat?â
âYouâre having woman trouble, arenât you?â
Can she read minds now? I stare at the seventeen-year-old with her too intelligent eyes, suspiciously. âWhy do you think that?â
âYou have that look.â She shrugs. âYouâve been staring intently into your shot glass for five minutes.â
âDonât you have dolls to play with or something?â
âDonât patronize me, Bryce. Iâm seventeen now.â
âYeah, old enough to use words like patronize.â
She huffs, and I chuckle. Iâve known Holly since she was ten. Sheâs always been like this. Too grown and smart for her own good.
âWhat are you drinking? Can I have some?â She reaches for the bottle of Jack, and I quickly snatch it from her finger.
âNo.â
âCome on, just a taste.â
âDiana will kill me.â
âShe doesnât have to know.â
Massaging the bridge of my nose, I ask, âHolly, what are you doing down here?â No one is allowed in Dadâs man cave, except me. I came in here to be alone before dinner. I figured Iâd stop by for dinner since I missed breakfast a few days ago. Itâs been three days since I left Abbyâs place in a foolish bout of temper. I still feel like an idiot. After I calmed down, I realized that I may have overreacted. The last thing I need right now is a meddling teenager invading my pity party.
Hollyâs lashes lower to hide her eyes and she shrugs. âI just thought you needed company.â
Iâm about to tell her I donât but detect her dejection. âAre you okay?â
âNot really. Mom and Michael are fighting again.â
I study her closely. âAre they fighting more often than usual?â Thereâs been many arguments between them since they got married. I honestly donât know why theyâre still married. Iâve always stayed out of their business. Now that I donât live here anymore, I have no clue what goes on in Marshall mansion.
Holly sighs. âYeah. I think itâs because of me.â
Giving her my full attention, I swivel my stool around to face her. âWhy do you think that?â
âI donât think Michael has ever liked me much. Iâm not his blood.â
âCome one, Holly, you knowââ
âItâs true. Iâm not stupid.â
No, sheâs far from that. Holly is incredibly perceptive. âLook, Iâm sure they argue about plenty of other things.â
Her lips twist into a sardonic smile. âThat doesnât make it any better.â
Scrubbing a hand over my face, I let out a laugh. âI know.â I have no idea what else to say to comfort a teenager about her parental insecurities. âHey, whenever you want to get away from the madnessââ and there can be plenty with our tyrant of a patriarch, ââ my door is open.â
Her face lights up. âReally?â
Iâm starting to think itâs time to pay more attention to Holly. She came along at a time when I was grown and engrossed in my own life, so we havenât bonded all that much. But, I consider her my kid sister in every way.
